Dying Light: The Beast PS4 and Xbox One versions canceled by Techland

Techland pulls the plug on last-gen ports of Dying Light: The Beast, blaming hardware limits, nearly a year after the game launched on current-gen and PC.

Nearly ten months after Dying Light: The Beast launched on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, Techland has officially confirmed that the previously planned PS4 and Xbox One versions will never arrive. The announcement came via the official Dying Light account on X on July 14, 2026, drawing a mixed reaction from the community and putting an end to months of silence on the subject.

What Techland Said

The announcement was made via the official Dying Light X account, with Techland citing technical limitations as the reason for the decision - stating that the game "was built from the ground up to take full advantage of current-generation hardware." In the statement, Techland explained that "its open world, advanced visuals, and fluid combat and traversal all depend on processing power and memory that previous-generation consoles simply cannot provide."

As development progressed, Techland said "it became clear that bringing the game to those platforms would require compromises that would prevent us from delivering the experience we set out to create." The studio was clear that this "was not done to leave PS4 or Xbox One behind," framing the decision as reflecting the "technical realities of development and our commitment to delivering the best possible experience." Refunds will be offered to players who pre-ordered either canceled version.

A Broken Promise

There is a controversy here: Techland previously promised that the PS4 and Xbox One versions would launch before the end of 2025, stating at launch that it had "prioritised development" for current-gen and PC, but was "committed to releasing them until the end of 2025."

The end of 2025 came and went with Techland remaining oddly silent. As 2026 progressed, the community became increasingly vocal with social-media posts asking what had happened to the last-gen ports. It took until July 14, 2026 for the developer to officially cancel them.

The gap between promise and cancellation is the sharpest part of the criticism. Many fans are understandably annoyed that it took Techland this long to provide any sort of update or make a decision regarding the fate of the PS4 and Xbox One versions.

The PS4 turns 13 this November - Techland joins a growing list of studios moving on from the platform.

Why the Reaction Is Mixed

Notably, Dying Light 2 - which The Beast started out as DLC for before being spun off into a full game - ran reasonably well on PS4 and Xbox One when it released in 2022. That context has led some players to question how Dying Light 2 is capable of running on last-gen hardware, while The Beast is not, arguing the newer game does not appear to be more technically demanding.

On the other side, some fans are understanding of the issues Techland must have faced, noting that almost six years into the current console generation, they were surprised the studio would even attempt to support the older platforms. The PS4 will turn 13 years old this November, making any new game release on the platform an increasingly rare proposition.

Those who purchased Dying Light 2's premium edition were eligible for a free copy of The Beast, which is why the cancellation comes as a particular blow to select fans still on last-gen consoles.

Where The Beast Stands Now

The game received its major content update in the form of Dying Light: The Beast - Restored Land Edition, which launched March 26, 2026. Existing owners received all the new content for free. This edition includes the full base game, all post-launch content, and a new persistent survival mode in which zombies do not respawn and neither does loot - with killing all zombies in an area actually restoring the map and healing the post-apocalyptic world.

For anyone still on the fence about picking up The Beast on current-gen platforms or PC, the Restored Land Edition represents the most complete version of the game available today. Check live pricing below.
