The long-running fan wish to play Fable 2 on PC has been given fresh air, following Xbox's surprise announcement of a new backwards compatibility program for Windows PCs and handhelds.
Xbox Backwards Compatibility Comes to PC
Microsoft announced Xbox Backward Compatibility for PC, a new preservation program that will let players run select classic Xbox games on Windows PCs and handhelds. The initial four titles available - BLiNX: The Time Sweeper, Conker: Live and Reloaded, Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge, and Fuzion Frenzy - are purchasable and included with all Game Pass plans.
According to Xbox, this launch "marks the beginning of a broader effort to preserve Xbox games from the past and bring them to PC over time." The program launched on July 22, 2026, in early release, with Xbox also announcing plans to bring Achievements to select original Xbox games over the next few months.
The slim opening lineup is being read as a signal rather than a ceiling. Xbox VP of Next Generation Jason Ronald had already signalled the intent at GDC 2026, stating the company is "committed to keeping games from four generations of Xbox playable for years to come."
The Fable PC Gap
The announcement has particular resonance for fans of Lionhead's Fable series, which has a peculiar and frustrating PC history. Fable: The Lost Chapters and its remaster Fable Anniversary are the only entries in the series available on Steam - Fable 2 was never ported to PC, and while Fable 3 was, it can no longer be picked up legitimately.
Fable 3 was removed from Steam in December 2013 because it was tied to the Games for Windows Live Marketplace, which had shut down. When the service closed, new Fable 3 licences could no longer be generated, effectively meaning the store ran out of digital copies. Physical and grey-market keys have since become collector's items: Fable 3 keys now fetch upwards of $250 on the resale market.
Fable 2 itself, developed by Lionhead Studios and released on October 21, 2008, has never appeared on PC in any form, making it one of the most notable Xbox 360 exclusives with zero official Windows presence.
Fan Reaction
Following the backwards compatibility announcement, Redditor pelle98 shared a post on the Fable subreddit pointing out that the program could finally result in Fable 2 and Fable 3 being available on PC.
Not everyone is convinced backwards compatibility is the ideal route, however - some fans want a proper port of Fable 2 added to Steam and for Fable 3 to simply be reactivated. Those options would require Microsoft to actively intervene with the Games for Windows Live licensing tangle, something the company has not done in the years since both games launched.
With Playground Games' Fable reboot set to release early next year, the timing for making the back catalogue accessible on PC would be close to ideal.
What Backwards Compatibility Would Mean
The new program is not traditional emulation. Rather than running Xbox code natively, Microsoft ports game code from the original Xbox (x86) and translates Xbox 360 code (PowerPC) to run on x86 Windows hardware - a process that requires per-title work and explains why the initial lineup is small. For Fable 2 specifically, which is an Xbox 360 title, that translation layer would need to be built fresh.
There is no confirmation from Microsoft that either Fable 2 or Fable 3 is actively in the pipeline for the program. But with the reboot approaching, the commercial logic for giving players a way to revisit the series is hard to ignore.
