Way to the Woods has been a long time coming. The game first gained public attention in December 2015, when developer Anthony Tan, then 16 years old, shared early concept renders on Reddit. More than a decade later, the atmospheric indie is finally making its public playable debut - ahead of its appearance in the Xbox section at Summer Game Fest Play Days, Xbox Wire played a brief demo of the 3D narrative game and spoke to its creator, ant tan, aka OnePixel.Dog.

Summer Game Fest Play Days 2026 is an invite-only press and creator event taking place from June 6-8 in Los Angeles, immediately following the Summer Game Fest Live kickoff on June 5. A Post-Human World Through Deer's Eyes

Way to the Woods is an upcoming adventure video game developed by the Australian studio OnePixel.Dog - the independent studio of Anthony Tan, a solo developer and artist based in Melbourne, Australia. The premise is deceptively simple: you play as a deer guiding a faun through abandoned urban environments, trying to find the way home to the woods. Humanity is gone, and the world is yours to explore - quietly, curiously, and on four legs.

Tan cited cinematic story games like The Last of Us and INSIDE as major inspirations, alongside aesthetic cues drawn from Deltarune, Katamari, and Kirby. The result, even in demo form, presents a strong and focused aesthetic identity rather than a scattershot of influences.

Puzzles Built Around Light

The core mechanic sees the player deer gathering light from discarded electronics - lamps, cell phones - into its antlers, then using that energy to power objects or push back encroaching black sludge. According to Tan, the puzzles are designed to engage rather than to frustrate:

"They're challenging enough to be satisfying to solve, but you can turn your brain off and enjoy this game easily."

The game opens by asking the player to name themselves and then "that most precious to you" - a name given to the faun companion. That emotional framing is held in check by minimal writing and the natural distance of the animal perspective.

Thinking Like a Deer

Tan has been deliberate about grounding the experience in a genuine animal consciousness. He described spending considerable development time imagining what it is like to think and feel as a deer - a prey animal for whom predator threat is the most immediate reality, but whose inner life goes far beyond survival. That philosophy filters through every layer of the game's design, from puzzle structure to visual language.

The cel-shaded graphics are minimalist and clean. The deer and faun animations are described as adorably expressive, while other animals - cats, mice - carry a charming economy of movement that echoes Katamari Damacy's aesthetic sensibility.

The Soundtrack Tie

What pulls the whole experience together is the score. aivi & surasshu are an electronic composer duo composed of pianist Aivi Tran and electronic artist Steven "Surasshu" Velema, known for composing soundtracks including that of Cartoon Network's animated series Steven Universe. Way to the Woods is a third-person adventure game by Anthony Tan, featuring a soundtrack from aivi & surasshu, composers for the show Steven Universe.
