Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game delayed to July 23

Gameplay Group pushes the Avatar-universe 2D fighter back three weeks to polish and add unplanned content, with a cross-play beta sweetening the delay.

Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game has slipped its launch window by three weeks. Developer Gameplay Group and publisher PM Studios announced on June 3 that the game is moving from its previously planned July 2 release date to July 23, 2026. The title is set to arrive on Windows PC (Steam), Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2, and PS5.

Why the delay?

In a statement to the Avatar community, the team cited a desire to "deliver the best possible experience at launch," adding that the extra time will be used to include "brand new content previously unplanned." The announcement did not detail what that content involves, but the phrasing suggests additional cosmetics or roster-adjacent additions rather than structural gameplay changes.

A beta softens the blow

Rather than leaving pre-order holders with nothing on the original launch date, the studio is running a closed beta in its place. Pre-order players on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC will gain beta access from July 2 to July 5, with cross-play enabled across all three platforms. The beta build will feature cross-play support and is confirmed to include Sokka and Azula as playable characters. Switch and Switch 2 players are not listed among the beta platforms.

Editorial take

A three-week delay is about as painless as these announcements get, and the decision to convert the original launch date into a cross-play beta is a smart move - it keeps the community engaged and gives the development team real-world netcode data before the full launch on July 23. The promise of unplanned new content, while vague, signals that Gameplay Group is investing beyond the minimum viable launch rather than simply fixing bugs. For Avatar fans who have waited years for a fighting game worthy of the IP, three extra weeks is a small price for a cleaner launch.
