Gears of War: E-Day confirmed Xbox console exclusive, launches October 6

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma confirmed E-Day won't come to PS5 - the prequel lands October 6 with Horde Siege, 4K ray tracing, and a $69.99 price tag.

Gears of War: E-Day had been one of the more talked-about exclusivity questions in gaming, but Xbox CEO Asha Sharma settled the debate at the Xbox Games Showcase 2026 on June 7. Sharma took the stage at the end of the reveal to confirm the game will be an Xbox console exclusive, meaning it will not be coming to PlayStation 5 and will release only on Xbox Series X and Series S. The reversal surprised some observers, given that the previous leadership strategy had pointed toward day-one multi-platform releases, but new Xbox boss Sharma signalled a deliberate change in approach.

"Xbox was built on the spirit of creativity and heart," Sharma said, "and as we kick off the show with Gears of War: E-Day, it's only fitting that as we return to Xbox, we return to Gears."

Release Date, Price and Game Pass

Gears of War: E-Day launches October 6, 2026, as a platform exclusive on Xbox Series X/S and PC. The game will be available day one for Xbox Game Pass subscribers. The standard edition is priced at $69.99, with a Premium Edition that includes five days of early access ahead of the October 6 street date. Pre-ordering also unlocks early access to the open beta on August 6 and grants the Exfil Dom Character Skin along with the Exfil Weapon Skin Set at launch.

Story: Emergence Day, 14 Years Earlier

As the sixth mainline installment in the franchise, E-Day is set 14 years before the events of the original game - following Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago as the Locust Horde erupts from underground and overwhelms the surface world of Sera. The game takes place in Kalona, a new city setting for the franchise. The entire campaign is played from the perspective of the new Bravo Squad, which includes Carter, a new Gear, and Lucas, a fresh cadet, rounding out the crew alongside Marcus and Dom. Bravo's story also connects with characters from broader Gears lore, including Gill Gettner and Tai Kaliso.

Campaign and Multiplayer Modes

Mode Players Key Detail
Campaign Co-op (Online) Up to 4 Full four-player online co-op
Split-Screen Co-op 2 Console only
Versus (Competitive) 4v4 Four new modes, new maps
Horde Siege Up to 12 Three squads, city-based maps

Exploration is woven into the campaign structure - how thoroughly players explore the city of Kalona will determine how many civilians they save, with off-the-beaten-path areas yielding additional environmental story discoveries. The primary source confirms four new competitive multiplayer modes alongside symmetrical new maps, with slide mechanics adding a fresh dimension to the classic Gnasher-range meta.

The standout multiplayer addition is Horde Siege: up to 12 players split across three squads battle the Locust across city-based maps. The Coalition has also committed to post-launch seasonal content, with a roadmap that lets players earn all rewards through in-game challenges.

Technical Specs: UE5, Ray Tracing and Performance

E-Day is built on Unreal Engine 5 and The Coalition is pushing its technical limits. Technical director Kate Rayner stated the game's "leap in technical capabilities is tremendous," and that E-Day boasts "over 100 times more environment and character details than Gears 5," which ran on Unreal Engine 4. Hardware-accelerated ray tracing - covering reflections and shadows - is included alongside a new destruction and gore system.

On console, the game targets 4K resolution with native HDR10 rendering and hardware-based 60 FPS ray tracing in the campaign, and 120 FPS in multiplayer. On PC, uncapped frame rates are available on capable hardware, with ultrawide support at 21:9 and 32:9 for both gameplay and menus. The PC version is also fully optimized for handheld play on Steam Deck, Xbox Ally X, and Xbox Ally devices.

Developer and Co-Developer

The game is developed by The Coalition in partnership with People Can Fly - the same pairing behind Gears of War 4, Gears 5, and the original trilogy co-development - and published by Xbox Game Studios.

Should You Pre-Order?

E-Day is shaping up as one of the biggest Xbox Series X/S exclusives of 2026, combining a well-executed origin story pitch with genuinely ambitious technical specs and a beefed-up multiplayer suite. The Horde Siege expansion to 12 players is the most meaningful structural upgrade for co-op fans, and the summer open beta is the low-risk way to test the waters before committing. Game Pass day-one inclusion means subscribers get it at no extra cost, but those who want the five-day head start or the pre-order skins will need to buy in before launch.
