Sea of Stars, the acclaimed indie RPG from Quebec City-based Sabotage Studio, has arrived on Nintendo Switch 2. The Switch 2 version appeared on the Japanese eShop and is set to launch June 8, 2026. It was already live on the Japanese store with other regions expected to follow.
The arrival was unannounced ahead of the eShop listing - no formal announcement had been made by the time the eShop page went live.
What's Included - and What Isn't
The Switch 2 release comes with a notable bonus baked in. It is priced at 4,400 yen in Japan and includes the Throes of the Watchmaker DLC in the base release. That DLC, a downloadable expansion released on May 20, 2025, adds a new area and unique game mechanics.
There is one significant caveat for returning players: there is no compatibility with save data from the Nintendo Switch 1 software. The Switch 2 eShop page notes this is a Nintendo Switch 2-exclusive software and that the Switch 1 version is sold separately, urging players to be careful about duplicate purchases. This also means the new version is not a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition in the standard sense - it is a dedicated, separate release.

Sea of Stars is a 2023 role-playing video game developed and published by Sabotage Studio. It was released on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S on August 29, 2023.
The game is presented in a fixed isometric view using two-dimensional pixel art, similar to Super Nintendo Entertainment System-era RPGs such as Chrono Trigger (1995). Creative director Thierry Boulanger's vision was to combine what he saw as the best parts of several older role-playing games, with an emphasis on modernizing and translating the feeling of playing them rather than directly copying them.
The game's combat stands out among its peers. It features timed hits that reward player skill, combo attacks, and a "locks" system that lets players exploit different damage types to interrupt powerful enemy abilities - all without random encounters or separate battle screens. Co-op support for up to three players, added via the free Dawn of Equinox update in 2024, is also part of the package.
How It Has Performed
Sea of Stars sold over 250,000 copies in its first week and was played by more than six million people by November 2024. The game received several accolades, including winning Best Independent Game at both the Golden Joystick Awards and The Game Awards 2023.

Pricing and Availability
The Switch 2 version launched first in Japan. Western eShop regions are expected to follow imminently. Players who already own the original Switch version should be aware that their progress will not carry over, effectively making this a fresh start on the new hardware.
